The Carousel

When Holden watches his sister on the carousel he says, If they att death off, they fall off, but its bad if you say anything to them (Salinger 211). This subtle quote from Holden reveals his miscellanea in character, and his new perspective on lifespan at the end of the story. His dream of saving the artlessness of young children is no longer the most important thing in his life (Takeuchi). In the carousel scene, Holden has made a total revolution back to reality, the reality that he can not cling to childrens innocence. Holden realizes that the destruction of innocence is inevitable.
Holdens liberation at the end of his story comes as he watches basketball team arouse the carousel. Phoebe protests that she is too mature to ride the carousel, but Holden buys her a ticket. The carousel has remained the same for many years, while the kids who ride it pay back older. Holden takes pleasure watching Phoebe on the carousel.
Holdens formulation to let his sister fall of the carousel at the end of the story, has confused many readers (Takeuchi). The mixed emotions of this scene make it unreadable of what Holden actually believes in. Throughout the story Holden has been obsessed with saving children from the smuttiness he sees in the world. Holden imagines a field on a cliff, full of children playing.



He says he would like to protect the children from move off the edge of the cliff by catching them if they were on their way to a terrible fall. But when Holden watches his sister on the carousel he no longer has these feelings to protect her innocence (Takeuchi).
