His schooling was very impressive and he became know for his background in law. Mr. Stevens practiced law in Gettysburg and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was a very hard and definite person when it came to jurist and he even helped defeat a bill abolishing the republics public school system and was a power of a protective tariff. When Stevens was in congress he was a Whig but also was totally against slavery.
