When I landed in the University of Kentucky at Lexington in 1992, I thought it was going to be a smooth ride, since this country was so rich, and also highly precious computer researchers. My seniors gave me the recession picture. Soon, I found myself looking for a job in the cafeteria, math department, library and all everyplace the university.
My basic job was as a Vending assist that paid minimum wages per hour. I had to fill the vendition machines in the medical center. When I showed up for training, the first assigning was to sweep and mop the floor, something I had non done onwards! On the job, I found people addressing me as Sir and treating me with obedience; unlike the way people address servants in India. The United States taught me the first lesson to respect and value labor. I carry that first pay-stub to this day.
It reminds me of what it took me to get to where I am today, and how to treat my brethren who are not so fortunate.
When school started, I was offered a research assistantship by a professor in the civil engineering. It was quite a change, since all of a sudden I was the highest paid research assistant from rags to riches, indeed! I realized how my efforts of making contacts and project my merits paid off well. It was my first impression of being entrepreneurial in the U.S.
When classes started, some more cultural learning followed. It did not matter whether the professor was in suit or shorts, whether the school-age child had long hair or short, or if somebody was ashen or black.
